Patti LuPone stars in The Roommate on Broadway at the Booth Theatre in fall 2024.
Patti Ann LuPone is a two-time Tony Award-winning actress and Broadway favorite who was born on April 21, 1949 in Northport, New York. She trained at the famous Julliard School in Manhattan and graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1972. Her Broadway debut would quickly follow when she was cast as Irina in the 1973 revival of Chekhov’s Three Sisters.
LuPone embarked on one of the most iconic stage careers in Broadway history, receiving Tony Awards for her performances as Eva Perón in the 1979 Broadway premiere of Evita and as Mama Rose in the 2008 Broadway revival of Gypsy. She also received Tony nominations for The Robber Bridegroom in 1976, Anything Goes in 1988, Sweeney Todd in 2006, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in 2011, and finally for War Paint in 2017.
Other select Broadway credits include Working in 1978, the role of Nancy in the 1984 revival of Oliver!, Master Class in 1996, and the 2001 revival of Noises Off. She was even granted her own concert series on Broadway with Patti LuPone on Broadway in 1995 and An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin in 2011.
Although her first love is the stage, LuPone has also appeared in a variety of TV series and films over the years, including Pose, Penny Dreadful, American Horror Story, Life Goes On, Driving Miss Daisy, Witness, and her 1998 Emmy-nominated guest appearance in Frasier.
LuPone has also widened her fan base by gracing the West End stage in London since the 1980s. She played Moll in The Cradle Will Rock and originated the role of Fantine in the London premiere of Les Misérables in the same year, earning an Olivier Award for her efforts in 1985. She would return to the UK and famously originate the role of Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard in 1993, earning another Olivier Award nomination. LuPone returned to the West End in 2018 to take on the role of Joanne in a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, a performance that won her a second Olivier Award in 2019. The production, under the direction of Marianne Elliott, transferred to Broadway to play the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, and LuPone is the only West End cast member that came with it. She won the Tony Award for her performance.
