About King Lear

Get King Lear tickets and experience a singular Shakespearean interpreter, Kenneth Branagh, don the crown as the Bard's tragic monarch. A powerful new production co-directed by Branagh, Lucy Skilbeck, and Rob Ashford (who directed the Academy Award-winning movie musical Chicago), King Lear comes to The Shed for just 50 performances. King Lear tickets will be available on New York Theatre Guide soon.

Branagh has played Hamlet in his Academy Award-nominated 1996 film, Macbeth in a celebrated stage production in London, and, now, he completes the triple crown of Shakespeare's most famed, tragic men by taking on King Lear. Testing his daughters to see who loves him most, Lear's ego leads him to estrangement, powerlessness, and insanity. Quickly fading and with fewer and fewer allies, Lear loses control just as he gains wisdom, understanding his family is most important only as it comes apart. Experience King Lear off Broadway in one of New York's newest and chicest venues, The Shed, which co-produces this stirring production, set in England’s barbarous landscape, alongside Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company and Fiery Angel.

Branagh performs in the production alongside recent Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts graduates; as president of that program, Branagh is giving an indelible opportunity to young performers while also bringing the play to a new generation. The London Theatre review called the kingly Branagh “leonine” and wrote, “The modern equivalent of a Georgian or Victorian actor-manager, Kenneth Branagh has done a huge amount to popularise Shakespeare.”

Reviews further celebrated his performance: The Guardian wrote he “delivers his Lear with slick, almost playful efficiency” across a “hurtling two hours with no interval — it is almost cinematic in its action-packed speed.” See the Shakespeare aficionado and Harry Potter star in one of the most anticipated imports of the year. Tickets to King Lear will be available soon.
