As rehearsals for the return of Hadestown on Broadway begin today, the full Hadestown company has been named. Hadestown resumes performances at the Walter Kerr Theatre from September 2.
André De Shields will reprise his Tony-winning performance as Hermes, joined by fellow Tony-nominated actors Eva Noblezada as Eurydice and Amber Gray as Persephone. Reeve Carney will return to playing Orpheus, with Tom Hewitt playing Hades for performances to October 31. Patrick Page will then return to Hadestown on November 2.
They are joined by Jewelle Blackman, Jessie Shelton, and Mariand Torres as the Fates, and and an ensemble including Anthony Chatmon II, Afra Hines, Timothy Hughes, John Krause, Trent Saunders, Kim Steele, Malcolm Armwood, Adam Hyndman, Tara Jackson, Yael "YaYa" Reich, T. Oliver Reid, and Khaila Wilcoxon.
Hadestown is inspired by the ancient Greek stories of Orpheus and Eurydice and King Hades and Persephone. Their love stories intertwine in the underworld, set to a score of jazz and folk music.
In a review of Hadestown on Broadway, Donna Herman said: "Going to hell has never been as much fun as seeing a performance of Anaïs Mitchell's musical Hadestown..."
Hadestown is based on the 2010 concept album by Anais Mitchell. Mitchell developed Hadestown alongside director Rachel Chavkin, with the musical winning eight Tony Awards including best musical. Together, they made history as the first female duo to both win Tonys for work on the same show.
The creative team includes scenic design by Rachel Hauck, costume design by Michael Krass, lighting design by Bradley King and sound design by Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz.
Hadestown is one of two musicals opening on Broadway on September 2. Waitress will also open at the Barrymore Theatre on September 2, starring Sara Bareilles as Jenna.
The North American tour of Hadestown will also begin in 2021. Performances begin in Greenville, SC, on October 5, ahead of an opening in Washington D.C. on October 15.
