The Oscar winner makes his Broadway debut in Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar's world-premiere play about a writer obsessed with artificial intelligence.

The full cast has been announced for Ayad Akhtar's new play *McNeal*, which opens at Lincoln Center Theater on 30 September. Previews begin on 5 September.

Joining the previously announced Academy Award-winner Robert Downey Jr., who will make his Broadway debut in the title role, are Brittany Bellizeare, Rafi Gavron, Melora Hardin, Andrea Martin, Ruthie Ann Miles, and Saisha Talwar.

Downey will play Jacob McNeal, a great writer and Nobel Prize in Literature contender, who is bringing out a new novel. But how will his career be impacted by an estranged son and his obsession with artificial intelligence?

McNeal will have direction by Bartlett Sher, set by Michael Yeargan and Jake Barton, costumes by Jennifer Moeller, lighting by Donald Holder, sound by Justin Ellington and Beth Lake, and projections by Jake Barton.

*McNEAL* marks Robert Downey Jr.’s Broadway debut and continues a lineage of roles in which he excels: charming but flawed men. In this new and topical drama, Downey Jr. stars as *McNEAL*, an internationally renowned author who is expected to one day win a Nobel Prize in Literature. Before he can get that prize, however, he has some axes to grind and a new book to finish, which he may or may not need the help of artificial intelligence to finally complete. Good authors borrow, but great ones steal.

The play promises a dynamo performance from Downey Jr., who has long been a staple of Hollywood and is now taking on his next artistic challenge on Broadway. With his quick-witted, thorny, and on-the-pulse plays, Ayad Akhtar’s writing will be a perfect match for an actor of Downey Jr.’s calibre. Paired with Bartlett Sher, the show is sure to be one to remember.

Andrea Louise Martin&nbsp;was born on January 15, 1947 in Portland, Maine. She is a two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway favorite&nbsp;whose credits include Noises Off, Pippin, Young Frankenstein, Oklahoma!, Candide, and My Favorite Year, among others. She is also known for her TV appearances on shows such as SCTV&nbsp;and Great News&nbsp;and films such as Hedwig and the Angry Inch&nbsp;and the My Big Fat Greek Wedding&nbsp;franchise.

Martin attended Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, and was cast in a touring production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown&nbsp;following graduation. She moved to Toronto in 1970, and during the following decade she would find work in a Canadian production of Godspell, two horror films (1973’s Cannibal Girls&nbsp;and 1974’s Black Christmas) and the popular SCTV&nbsp;series. She would appear in a variety of roles in the comedy sketch series (including as Second City Television station manager Edith Prickley) and was also a valued member of the writing team, which&nbsp;racked up a grand total of nine Emmy Award nominations in 1982 and 1983, winning two.&nbsp;Martin herself also earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Variety or Music Series&nbsp;in 1982.

Martin burst onto the Broadway stage in 1992, officially making her Broadway debut in My Favorite Year, playing the role of Alice Miller from October 1992 through to January 1993 for Lincoln Center Theater. For her show-stealing performance she earned her first Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award, and a Theatre World Award. Her next three Broadway outings would be roles in musical revivals, originating the roles of the Old Lady in Candide in the spring of 1997 and Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! in the spring of 2002, earning her second and third Tony Award nominations in the process, and finally assuming the role of Golde in Fiddler on the Roof from January to July 2005. From October 2007 she starred in Mel Brooks’ musical comedy Young Frankenstein, receiving a fourth Tony Award nomination in 2008 for her portrayal of Frau Blucher, and in the spring of 2009 she added a straight play to her Broadway résumé with the role of Juliette in a revival of Exit the King. The theater was named after Vivian Beaumont Allen, a notable patron of the arts. Inaugurated in 1965, it sports an architecturally distinct design, created by Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen. The theater, featuring a thrust stage extending into the audience, has a seating capacity of approximately 1,080. Over its illustrious history, it has hosted numerous famous productions and garnered multiple Tony Awards. A testament to its prestigious status is that it has been the stage for many world premieres. 

**Getting to the Venue:** The Vivian Beaumont Theater is located at 150 West 65th Street. It's easily accessible by subway- take 1 train to 66th Street-Lincoln Center Station or the A, B, C, D, and 1 trains to 59th Street-Columbus Circle. Additionally, buses M5, M7, M11, M66, and M104 have nearby stops. Parking is available at Lincoln Center's parking garage and other surrounding parking facilities.

Designed by Eero Saarinen with the collaboration of Jo Mielziner, the Vivian Beaumont Theater opened on October 21, 1965, with a revival of *Georg Büchner's Danton's Death* starring James Earl Jones and Stacy Keach.

The venue was named after heiress Vivian Beaumont Allen, who donated $3 million for its construction but died in 1962 before its completion. The theatre shares a building with the Off-Broadway venue the [Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lincoln-center-mitzi-e-newhouse-theater). Lincoln Center Theater has operated both since 1985. LCT's intimate [Clare Tow Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lincoln-center-claire-tow-theater), situated on the roof of the Vivian Beaumont, was added in 2012.

The Vivian Beaumont Theater is the only Broadway theatre not in the theatre district around Times Square. Located within Lincoln Center near 65th Street and 10th Avenue, it is the northernmost and westernmost Broadway house. The venue is also one of five Broadway theatres named for a woman.
