Avenue Q celebrates 5068 performances and extends
The hit Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q will this weekend celebrate its 2534 performance off-Broadway, matching the number of performances the show enjoyed at the Golden Theatre on Broadway. The off-Broadway production is currently running at the New World Stages, where it is now booking to December 2016.
The show will celebrate its 2534 performance off Broadway this Sunday, which, combined with the 2534 performances on Broadway, will mark its 5068 performance in total in New York City.
Avenue Q originally opened on Broadway on 31 July 2003, following previews from 10 July. It went on to run six and a half years at the Golden Theatre, closing on 13 September 2009.
The production re-opened off-Broadway at the New World Stages on 21 October 2009, following previews from 9 October.
The cast currently stars Nick Kohn, Danielle K. Thomas (both transferred from the Golden to New World Stages), Elizabeth Ann Berg, Kerri Brackin, Grace Choi, Ben Durocher, Jason Jacoby, Katie Boren, Imari Hardon, Michael Liscio, Jr. and Jed Resnick.
The musical tells the tale of a group of 20-somethings fresh out of college, people and puppets alike, who lives as neighbors on a street in New York where they've come to pursue their big dreams and search for their purpose in life.
Avenue Q features music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, and is directed by Jason Moore. Based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, with puppets conceived and designed by Rick Lyon, it has musical supervision by Stephen Oremus, choreography by Ken Roberson, scenic design by Anna Louizos, costume design by Mirena Rada, lighting design by Howell Binkley, and sound design by ACME Sound Partners.
Avenue Q is produced by Kevin McCollum, Robyn Goodman, Jeffrey Seller, The Vineyard Theatre and The New Group.
