'Suffs' musical to premiere on Broadway this spring
Shaina Taub's show about the early leaders of the women's suffrage movement comes to the Music Box Theatre after a world premiere at The Public Theater in 2022.
March on! Suffs will come to Broadway this spring, opening at the Music Box Theatre on April 18.
The show's title is an abbreviated form of "suffragists," referencing the leaders of the women's suffrage movement that led to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment allowing women to vote. Suffs takes place seven years before that happened, telling the stories of the young women who kickstarted a new wave of the movement, brushing up against older generations of suffragists to make change.
Shaina Taub wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the show, which premiered off Broadway in spring 2022 at The Public Theater. New York Theatre Guide's four-star Suffs review reads, "Just as the suffragists broke down the doors of the patriarchy, Suffs breaks down the doors of musical theatre, showing that a cast and creative team of mostly women can tell a story that is important, powerful, and about all of us."
Taub also starred in the Public's production as Alice Paul alongside a cast featuring Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells, Grace McLean as Woodrow Wilson, and Phillipa Soo as Inez Milholland.
Casting for the Broadway production has yet to be announced.
On the creative side, Suffs features direction by Tony Award nominee Leigh Silverman, choreography by Mayte Natalio, scenic design by Riccardo Hernández, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Lap Chi Chu, sound design by Jason Crystal with associate Sun Hee Kil, orchestrations by Michael Starobin, and music supervision and music direction by Andrea Grody.
Additionally, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Malala Yousafzai join the producing team alongside lead producers Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman.
