‘Tammy Faye’ to close on Broadway
The musical about televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker features a book by James Graham, music by Elton John, and lyrics by Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters.
Tammy Faye has set its closing date on Broadway, playing its final performance on December 8. At the time of closing, it will have played 53 total performances at the Palace Theatre.
Tammy Faye is a new musical about the tumultuous life and career of 20th-century televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. The show charts how she and her husband Jim Bakker founded the TV show The PTL Club and took a more inclusive approach to religion than their contemporaries. Their show expanded into a whole franchise but soon crumbled amid financial and sexual scandals, forcing Tammy Faye to find a fresh start.
The show features a book by James Graham, music by Elton John, and lyrics by Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters. It premiered in London in 2022 under the direction of Rupert Goold, who also stages the Broadway production.
“You must admire its flash, energy, and a bright star turn by Broadway newcomer Katie Brayben in the lead role,” New York Theatre Guide’s Tammy Faye review reads.
Alongside Brayben, who reprises her Olivier Award-winning performance as Tammy from London, the Broadway cast also includes Christian Borle as Jim Bakker, Michael Cerveris as Jerry Falwell, Autumn Hurlbert as the Tammy Faye Bakker alternate, Nick Bailey as Paul Crouch, Charl Brown as Steve Pieters, Mark Evans as Billy Graham, Allison Guinn as Jan Crouch, Ian Lassiter as Jimmy Swaggart/Ronald Reagan/Archbishop, Raymond J. Lee as John Fletcher, Max Gordon Moore as Thomas S. Monson/Marvin Gorman, Alana Pollard as Jessica Hahn, and Andy Taylor as Pat Robertson/Ted Turner.
