'The Book of Mormon' becomes ninth-longest-running Broadway show in history

With tonight's performance, the nine-time Tony Award-winning musical surpasses the original 14-year run of Mamma Mia!

Rejoice! Tonight, September 25, The Book of Mormon will become the ninth-longest-running show in Broadway history with its 5,759th performance. It surpasses the original Broadway production of Mamma Mia!, which ran from October 2001 to September 2015.

The Book of Mormon celebrated its 15th anniversary earlier this year, having opened at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre in March 2011. It has since become the longest-running production in the theatre's history and broken box office records there more than 50 times.

The R-rated musical satire from Trey Parker and Matt Stone (South Park) and Robert Lopez (Avenue Q) follows a pair of Mormon missionaries who get creative with their preaching to successfully convert skeptical Ugandan villagers. It won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Grammy Award for its cast album.

The current cast includes Kevin Clay as Elder Price, Diego Enrico as Elder Cunningham, Sydney Quildon as Nabulungi, Charlie Franklin as Elder McKinley, Jacques C. Smith as Mafala Hatimbi, Jay Wilkison as Missionary Training Center Voice/Price’s Dad/Joseph Smith/Mission President, and Derrick Williams as the General.

As previously announced, original cast members Nikki M. James and Rory O'Malley will reprise their roles of Nabulungi and Elder McKinley, respectively, from October 27 to January 17.
