Titanic: Broadway revival to arrive in fall
A revival of Maury Yeston and Peter Stone's Tony-winning musical Titanic is to arrive on Broadway in the fall following a six-week engagement at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, from 22 Jul - 31 Aug 2014.
This new production of the musical will be directed by Thom Southerland, who helmed a new chamber version of the musical at London's fringe venue The Southwark Playhouse from 26 July to 31 Aug 2013. That production opened to good reviews with The Times describing it as, "A gripping, ambitious ensemble piece and, with a steady hand and a gimlet eye for detail, the director steers it on a course to success."
Additional production details including creative team, casting and a New York theatre will be announced at a later date.
Featuring a book by Peter Stone, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, Titanic tells the story of RMS Titanic, who in the final hour of 14th April 1912 collided with an iceberg and 'the unsinkable ship' slowly sank. It was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th Century. Based on actual characters aboard the greatest ship in the world, the musical focuses on their hopes and aspirations. Unaware of the fate that awaits them, the Third Class immigrants dream of a better life in America, the newly-enfranchised Second Class dream of achieving the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and the millionaires of the First Class dream of their gilded world lasting forever.
The musical's score includes the songs 'Godspeed Titanic,' 'I Must Get On That Ship' and 'We'll Meet Tomorrow.'
The revival of Titanic is to be produced on Broadway by David Mirvish and, Barry and Fran Weissler.
The Broadway premiere of Titanic, directed by Richard Jones and choreographed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on 23 Apr 1997 and ran for 804 performances. The production won five Tony Awards in 1997 including Best Musical, Book of a Musical and Best Score.
