When We Were Young and Unafraid: full cast announced

The Manhattan Theatre Club has now announced full casting for the world premiere of When We Were Young and Unafraid, a new play by Sarah Treem ("House of Cards," "In Treatment"), directed by Tony Award nominee Pam MacKinnon ('Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,' 'Clybourne Park') at New York City Center - Stage I.

 

 

Joining Two-time Tony Award and Emmy winner Cherry Jones ('Doubt', 'The Heiress') will be Obie Award Winner Cherise Boothe, Patch Darragh, Zoe Kazan and Morgan Saylor.

The limited engagement of When We Were Young and Unafraid will begin previews 21 May 2014, with an official opening set for Tue 17 Jun 2014, and is set to close on 10 Aug 2014.

Synopsis: 'Agnes (Cherry Jones) has turned her quiet bed and breakfast into one of the few spots where a woman on the run can seek refuge. But to Agnes' dismay, her latest young runaway Mary Anne is having a profound influence on her teenage daughter Penny, forcing each girl to question her destiny. And as the drums of the feminist revolution grow louder, Agnes is forced to confront her own presumptions about the people she's been trying to help.'

Cherry Jones (Agnes) returns to MTC after originating the role of 'Sister Aloysius' in John Patrick Shanley's 'Doubt,' for which she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. Jones received her first Tony Award for 'The Heiress' and an Emmy Award for her role as "President Allison Taylor" in "24."

Cherise Boothe (Hannah) won an Obie Award Winner in 2012 for her performance in 'Milk Like Sugar' (Playwrights Horizons). Her other Off-Broadway credits include 'Ruined' (also at Manhattan Theatre Club),'Father Comes Home From The Wars' (Parts 1, 2 & 3), 'Ohio State Murders', 'King Hedley II' and 'Huck & Holden'.

Patch Darragh (Paul) has appeared on Broadway in 'Our Town'. His Off-Broadway credits include 'Appropriate' (Signature), 'The Jammer' (Atlantic), 'Kin' (Playwrights Horizons), 'Crimes of the Heart' and 'The Glass Menagerie' (Roundabout - Lortel Nomination: Outstanding Lead Actor), 'All That I Will Ever Be' (NYTW), 'The Ruby Sunrise' (Public), 'Where We're Born' (Rattlestick), 'Balm in Gilead' (Beau Willimon's Warehouse), 'The Grille Room', 'Spin' and 'The Secret Agenda of Trees' (Cherry Lane).

Zoe Kazan (Mary Anne) has appeared on Broadway in 'A Behanding in Spokane', 'The Seagull', 'Come Back, Little Sheba'. Her Off-Broadway credits include 'Clive', 'Angels in America Parts 1 & 2', 'Things We Want', '100 Saints You Should Know' (Lucille Lortel nomination) and 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie'.

Morgan Saylor (Penny) is best known for her TV role as Dana Brody on the hit series 'Homeland'.

The creative team behind When We Were Young and Unafraid features scenic design by Scott Pask, costumes by Jessica Pabst, lighting by Russell H. Champa, sound and original music by Broken Chord and fight direction by Thomas Schall.
