New Amsterdam Theatre

The New Amsterdam Theatre was designed by Henry Hertz and Hugh Tallant. Construction began in 1902, and the venue officially opened on October 23, 1903. The inaugural production was William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. 

From 1913 to 1927, the theatre housed the Ziegfeld Follies variety revue, which showcased such talents as Fanny Brice of Funny Girl fame. In 1937, the building became a cinema and ultimately closed its doors in 1985.

In May 1995, Disney Theatrical Productions signed a 49-year lease for the property and restored it to a traditional theatre. The building officially reopened on April 2, 1997, and the first show to play there was the Broadway premiere of Disney's The Lion King that October.
