About The Flea Theater

The Flea Theater is located in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan. Jim Simpson, Mac Wellman, and Kyle Chepulis founded The Flea in 1996, and the company's first venue was located on William Street. Construction of the current theatre began in 2013, and the new building opened on September 28, 2017.

Whereas the previous theatre had two performances spaces with 74 and 70 seats, respectively, the new Flea has three: The 46-seat proscenium theatre Siggy, named for actress Sigourney Weaver (married to Simpson); the multipurpose area Pete, with a capacity of 80 between the indoor space and the attached outdoor garden; and the 99-to-120-seat black box theatre Sam, named for actor Sam Cohn.

The Flea is a small space known for presenting new American theatre and experimental works in a black box setting, as well as for giving screen actors a place to perform on the small stage. Some notable works at the Flea have included The Parisian Woman, which went to Broadway with Uma Thurman six years after the play's 2011 Flea premiere, and The Guys, a play staged in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks.
