York Theatre Company

The York Theatre Company, founded by Janet Hayes Walker in 1969, remounts theatrical treasures from the past and supports the development of new productions. Since 1997, the company has exclusively produced musical theatre.

In 1993, the company moved into St. Peter’s Church in the Citigroup Center Complex. The space accommodated approximately 160-180 seats. York now puts on its shows at the 204-seat Theatre at St. Jean's on the Upper East Side.

York Theatre Company received a special Drama Desk Award in 2006, recognizing its “vital contributions to theatre by developing and presenting new musicals.” The company produces three to four Off-Broadway productions each season, as well as concert presentations and developmental readings.
