Florence Welch to write original score for new ‘The Great Gatsby’ musical

The show is currently being tipped as pre-Broadway.

A new musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is currently in development, with Florence Welch to write the original score. The Great Gatsby is currently slated as a pre-Broadway production, with performance dates to be announced.

As reported in Broadway News, Florence Welch is best known as the lead singer of Florence and the Machine, with songs including "Dog Days are Over" and "Spectrum". Welch has previous history with The Great Gatsby, penning the song "Over the Love" for the 2013 film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Speaking about The Great Gatsby, Welch said: "This book has haunted me for a large part of my life. It contains some of my [favorite] lines in literature. Musicals were my first love, and I feel a deep connection to Fitzgerald's broken romanticism."

Welch will write the lyrics, with Thomas Bartlett and Welch co-writing the score. The Great Gatsby will feature a book by Martyna Majok and direction by Rebecca Frecknall. Performance dates, casting and a venue are to be announced, but the production is being described as "pre-Broadway".

The Great Gatsby follows Nick Carraway, a World War One veteran who seeks his American dream in New York. Attracted by Jay Gatsby's hedonistic lifestyle, Nick attends a party and finds himself drawn into a new world, filled with deceit, lies and lust.

Later this year, an immersive adaptation of The Great Gatsby will receive its American premiere, with dates to be confirmed.
