Joel Grey-directed ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ to return off Broadway this fall
Steven Skybell reprises the role of Tevye.
Following a year-long run at Stage 42, the all-Yiddish adaptation of Fiddler on the Roof will return to New York. Joel Grey directs Fiddler on the Roof at New World Stages, with performances from November 13 to 1 Jan. 2023.
Set in Russia at the turn of the 1905 Revolution, Fiddler on the Roof follows Tevye, a Jewish milkman who navigates faith, family and changing traditions in Anatevka. Fiddler on the Roof is performed entirely in Yiddish and presented with English and Russian Supertitles.
"The fictional Anatevka of Fiddler on the Roof is based on shtetls that were located outside of Kyiv in present-day Ukraine. We can't help but think of the displaced residents of Anatevka while a new generation of refugees are fleeing their homeland due to the current crisis," commented Zalmen Mlotek, National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF)'s artistic director.
Steven Skybell will reprise the role of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. Further casting will be revealed at a later date.
Joel Grey directs Fiddler on the Roof, and the show features choreography by Jerome Robbins and new movement and musical staging by Staś Kmieć.
Fiddler on the Roof played at Stage 42 in 2019, earning a Drama Desk award for Oustanding Revival of a Musical. In a Fiddler on the Roof review on New York Theatre Guide, our critic said: "By giving us the tale in Yiddish, Joel Grey and this company make us listen in ways for which we are unprepared. The sound of language opens more than the ears. It opens the heart."
Fiddler on the Roof features a book by Joseph Stein based on stories by Sholem Aleichem, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. The Yiddish translation is by Shraga Friedman.
