Spider-Man: accident stops show mid-performance.
The New York Times reports that the 15 Aug 2013 performance of Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark was stopped around 9pm, during the show's second act, after performer Daniel Curry was injured on stage and sent to hospital for medical treatment.
One audience member, Melissa Kessler, told the New York Times that the actors leg was pinned by a trap door that appeared to have closed shut. In a interview she said,
The floor looked completely closed on his leg. They brought out a privacy screen and a lot of people on stage started getting things going. A stretcher was brought out, they were using a saw to cut a hole in the stage floor.
The actor Daniel Curry, a member of the show's swing, was reported to have been taken to Bellevue Hospital in "serious condition."
Actors, especially dancers, in a Broadway musical will often suffer minor injuries and Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark is not unusual in that regard. However, the show, which is said to have the most extensive computerized automation and special effects then any show on the great white way, has been plaqued with a number of serious injuries
On 28 Nov 2010 Natalie Mendoza, who played 'Arachne' suffered concussion when she was struck on the head by a piece of rope that was holding production equipment.
On 20 Dec 2010 Christopher W. Tierney , who performed stunts dressed as Spider-Man, was admitted to instensive care after falling several feet from a platform. His injuries included an hairline skull fracture, four broken ribs, a bruised lung, internal bleeding and cracks in three lumbar vertebrae. Tierney returned to the show five months laterafter new safety procedures had been out in place.
In Feb 2013 Joshua Kobak, who replaced Christopher W. Tierney, filed papers to sue the production company for "two herniated discs, a concussion, whiplash and holes in both knees," injuries he claims he received as a result of performing in the show on equipment that had not been properly maintained, or calibrated for the height, weight and size differences between himself and Christopher W. Tierney.
On 16 Mar 2011 T.V. Carpio, who repaced Natalie Mendoza in the role of 'Arachne,' suffered unspecified onstage injuries which led to her taking a two-week leave on Doctor's orders.
