25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, opened at the Circle In The Square on the 2 May 2005, following previews from 15 Apr. The musical originally opened Off-Broadway at Second Stage on the 7 Feb 2005, following previews from the 11 Jan 2005.
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has music and lyrics by William Finn, book by *Rachel Sheinkin and is based on an idea conceived by Rebecca Feldman. The musical is directed by *James Lapine, with choreography by Dan Knechtges, costumes by Beowulf Boritt, lighting by Natasha Katz and sound by Dan Moses Schreier.
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee stars Derrick Baskin (Mitch Mahoney), Deborah Craig (Gramercy Park), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Leaf Coneybear), *Dan Fogler (William Barfee), Lisa Howard (Rona Janet), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Olive Ostrovsky), Jose Llana (Tripp Barrington), Jay Reiss (Douglas Panch), Sarah Saltzberg (Logan Schwarzengrubeniere).
*Rachel Sheinkin won a 2005 Tony Award and 2005 Drama Desk Award for Best Book of a Musical, and *Dan Fogler won a 2005 Tony Award and 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical. *James Lapine won the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a musical and the ensemble for 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee won the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.
For 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee off-Broadway engagement, it won two 2005 Lucille Lortel Awards: Outstanding Musical, and once again *Dan Fogler won Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical.
In 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn�t everything and that losing doesn�t necessarily make you a loser.
