Lincoln Center Theater to stream ‘The Royale’
Marco Ramirez's play made its off-Broadway debut in 2016.
Lincoln Center Theater will stream its 2016 production of The Royale for the first time later this month. The acclaimed show will be available to stream from April 22 - May 16, starring Khris Davis and Montego Glover.
The Royale dramatises Jack Johnson's incredible boxing career to become the first African-American heavyweight world champion of the world. First seen at London's Bush Theatre in 2015, Marco Ramirez's play made its off-Broadway premiere the following year in the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre at Lincoln Center Theatre.
Rachel Chavkin directed, with Khris Davis as Jay "The Sport Johnson", who recently starred in Judas and the Black Messiah. The cast included McKinley Belcher III, Khris Davis, Montego Glover, John Lavelle and Clarke Peters.
In a review from Holli Harms for New York Theatre Guide, "Director Rachel Chavkin has set the pace for Marco Ramirez's play, The Royale, with claps and stomps, creating visceral partners between words and movement and making us the play's sparring partner. Her brilliant staging, mustered with Ramirez's story and the flowing connected ensemble of this marvelous cast is like watching a jazz band riff off of each other."
Future streams include The Wolves by Sarah DeLappe and Marys Seacole by Jackie Sibblies Drury. Dates for upcoming streams are to be announced.
