Real Women Have Curves: The Musical will premiere on Broadway in 2025, with dates and a theatre to be announced.

The musical is adapted from the 1990 play by Josefina López, which HBO adapted into a film in 2002. Real Women Have Curves is set in summer 1987 in L.A., where Ana dreams of attending college and pursuing a career in New York. However, her family wants her to stay home and work at their garment factory, and Ana must choose whose dreams to sacrifice.

Real Women Have Curves features a book by Lisa Loomer; music and lyrics by Benjamin Velez and Grammy Award-winning artist Joy Huerta (of the Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy), additional material by Nell Benjamin, and music supervision by Nadia DiGiallonardo. Tony and Olivier Award winner Sergio Trujillo directs and choreographs.

“I am thrilled to be a part of bringing Real Women Have Curves: The Musical to Broadway,” said Huerta in a statement. “Songwriting for theatre is a new undertaking for me, and it’s been a thrill to collaborate with Sergio, Bejamin, Lisa, Nell, and the rest of this extremely talented team. Ana’s story is such a powerful and universal one that already holds so much cultural relevance, and we look forward to bringing it to new audiences in this musical format.”

The Real Women Have Curves had its world premiere at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2023. Casting and additional creative team for the Broadway run have yet to be announced.
