Greenwich House first opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1902 as a community center dedicated to supporting the area's immigrant population. To this day, the building still functions this way, offering a range of initiatives like the Barrow Street Nursery School.
During the late 1990s, the Drama Dept. Theatre Company produced shows at Greenwich House Theater. In 2003, producers Scott Morfee and Tom Wirtschafter — the founders of the Barrow Street Theatre company — took ownership, renamed the venue for itself, and produced various shows there.
After the closure of its immersive production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in August 2018, the venue reassumed its original name. Since early 2019, Ars Nova has produced shows at the Greenwich House Theater.
