Amy Beth Schumer was born on June 1, 1981 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. She attended South Side High School in Rockville Centre, NY, as well as the Hebrew School of the Central Synagogue of Nassau County, and graduated in 1999. After moving to Baltimore, Maryland, she studied theatre at Towson University and graduated in 2003. Upon moving back to NYC, she trained for a further two years at the William Esper Studio — an acting school in Manhattan — while working as a waitress and bartender on the side.
Her career in stand-up comedy began in June 2004 and her breakthrough came after appearing on a Comedy Central episode of Live at Gotham from the Gotham Comedy Club and on Last Comic Standing, eventually placing fourth on the popular NBC series. Various television appearances would follow, including Reality Bites Back, Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld, Comedy Central Presents, Hoppus on Music, 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Delocated, and Girls.
Schumer has toured extensively as a stand-up comedian and her televised specials, which include Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff, Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo and Amy Schumer: The Leather Special, have garnered great acclaim and Emmy Award nominations.
Her meteoric rise as one of the world’s top female comedians was largely thanks to her Comedy Central show Inside Amy Schumer, which began airing in April 2013. She has received a total of eight Emmy Award nominations for the comedy series, winning Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2015. Her film career also flourished after writing and starring in the 2015 movie Trainwreck, earning Schumer her first Golden Globe nomination. She was last seen on the silver screen alongside Goldie Hawn in Snatched, which was released in May 2017.
Ms. Schumer made her Broadway debut in Steve Martin’s absurdist comedy Meteor Shower at the Booth Theatre from November 1, 2017 to January 21, 2018.
