Charlie Cox

Charlie Thomas Cox was born on December 15, 1982, in London, England. He is known for playing the titular role in Marvel's Daredevil on Netflix, his TV role as Owen Sleater on HBO's Boardwalk Empire, and movie roles in The Theory of Everything, Stardust, and Casanova.

Raised in East Sussex in the UK, Cox attended Ashdown House School before moving to Dorset and enrolling at Sherborne School. He would ultimately train as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

His first significant role was in the 2003 psychological thriller Dot the I, which he followed by landing the role of Lorenzo in the Al Pacino-led 2004 film adaptation of The Merchant of Venice. Over the next couple of years, he was cast in supporting roles in films such as Casanova (as Giovanni Bruni) and the BBC's A for Andromeda (as Dennis Bridger). His big break came with the 2007 fantasy film Stardust, after landing the leading role of Tristan Thorn opposite Claire Danes, Robert De Niro, and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Since Stardust, Cox's most notable screen credits include Stone of Destiny (2008), Glorious 39 (2009), Downton Abbey (Duke of Crowborough, 2010), There Be Dragons, and Moby Dick (2011). His first recurring role on television would be Owen Sleater in the hit HBO series Boardwalk Empire, appearing in a total of 23 episodes across seasons 2 and 3 from 2011 to 2012.

After starring in the independent film Hello Carter, as well as Legacy for the BBC, his next big film role was Jonathan Hellyer Jones (opposite Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones) in the 2014 Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything. Cox would go on to find a new level of fame upon entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the titular character of Daredevil on Netflix. As Matt Murdock (and his superhero alter ego, Daredevil), he starred in 39 episodes over three seasons of the hit series from 2015 through 2018, and also reprised the role in Marvel's The Defenders in 2017. In 2018, he also starred as Basil in King of Thieves opposite Michael Caine, Michael Gambon, and Jim Broadbent.

On stage, Cox appeared as Giovanni in a 2005 Off-West End revival of 'Tis Pity She's a Whore at the Southwark Playhouse and made his West End debut as Bill in Harold Pinter's The Collection at the Ambassadors Theatre in 2008. He would go on to star in the titular role of The Prince of Homburg at the Donmar Warehouse in 2010 and would finally make his New York stage debut, courtesy of Manhattan Theatre Club, starring in Nick Payne's Incognito at New York City Center in late spring 2016. He received his first Lucille Lortel Award nomination at the 2017 ceremony for his efforts.

Cox returned to the West End from March through June 2019, starring opposite Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton in a celebrated revival of Harold Pinter's classic Betrayal at the Harold Pinter Theatre. The production transferred to Broadway's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre for a limited engagement from August 14 through December 8, 2019.
