Ethan Hawke

Born in Austin, Texas on November 6, 1970, Ethan Green Hawke is an award-winning actor. He received an Obie Award for his 2011 performance in Blood from a Stone. Hawke has also been nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in The Coast of Utopia, and for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in 2005 for his work in Hurlyburly. Besides appearing on stage, Hawke has starred in numerous films including Training Day and Boyhood. He is also a writer, receiving Academy Award nominations for his writing for Before Sunset and Before Midnight.

Hawke made his professional theatre debut in 1991 playing the role of Young Casanova in an Off-Broadway production of Casanova. His Broadway debut came in 1993, when he starred in a 1992 revival of The Seagull as Konstantin Treplev. He then had a 10-year hiatus from the Broadway stage until he played Henry Percy in a production of Henry IV alongside Richard Easton and Audra McDonald.

From 2006 to 2007, Hawke starred in The Coast of Utopia. Split into three parts, the production went on to win the 2007 Tony Award for Best Play. A nine-hour long production in total, Hawke played the role of Michael Bakunin in all three parts: Voyage, Shipwreck, and Salvage. He appeared in the production from November 27, 2006 through 13 May, 2007.

Hawke’s next Broadway production was in 2014, playing the titular role in a 2014 revival of Macbeth alongside John Glover and Brian d’Arcy James.

Hawke has also directed three off-Broadway productions throughout his career. His directorial debut came in 2007, when he directed Things We Want at the Acorn Theater. Since then, he has directed two more productions at the same venue: A Lie of the Mind in 2010 and Clive in 2013.

Ethan Hawke returned to Broadway to play the role of Lee in Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of Sam Shepard's True West at the American Airlines Theatre from December 27, 2018 to March 17, 2019.
