2024 Tony Award winners announced
The Outsiders musical and the play Stereophonic won top prizes at this year's ceremony, which celebrated the best of Broadway theatre in the 2023-24 season.
The 2024 Tony Awards celebrate the best of the 2023-24 Broadway season, and the announcement of this year's winners took place at the David H. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center. Ariana DeBose hosted for the third year in a row, and Julianne Hough and Utkarsh Ambudkar hosted the pre-show, The Tony Awards: Act One, during which additional awards were announced.
The most awards of the night went to Stereophonic, David Adjmi and Will Butler’s play with music about a ‘70s rock band on the cusp of stardom. It made history as the most Tony-nominated play ever with 13 nods, and it won five, including Best Play.
The Outsiders was named Best Musical, tying with Best Musical Revival winner Merrily We Roll Along. Appropriate starring Sarah Paulson won Best Play Revival, and Paulson won Best Leading Actress in a Play.
Multiple special awards were also awarded. Comedian Alex Edelman, sound designer Abe Jacob, and hair and wig designer Nikiya Mathis won Special Tony Awards. The recipients of the Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre were projection designer Wendall K. Harrington, arts administrators Colleen Jennings-Roggernsack and Judith O. Rubin, the Dramatists Guild Foundation, and the Samuel J. Friedman Health Center.
Billy Porter received the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his humanitarian work for LGBT+ and AIDS advocacy. Director Jack O’Brien and director/playwright/producer George C. Wolfe received the Lifetime Achivement Award.
The Wilma Theater, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received the 2024 Regional Theatre Tony Award, and CJay Philip received the 2024 Excellence in Theatre Education Award.
