Paula Vogel to receive Lifetime Achievement Obie Award
The American Theatre Wing and The Village Voice have officially annnounced that acclaimed playwright Paula Vogel will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Obie Award at The 62nd Annual Obie Awards ceremony, which will take place on Monday, May 22, 2017 at Webster's Hall.
Ms. Vogel won Obie Awards for 'How I Learned to Drive' in 1997 and for 'The Baltimore Waltz' in 1992. Her other off-Broadway credits include 'And Baby Makes Seven,' 'Desdemona,' 'The Mineola Twins,' 'The Long Christmas Ride Home,' 'The Oldest Profession,' 'Hot 'n' Throbbing,' 'A Civil War Christmas,' and finally Indecent, which recently transferred to the Cort Theatre, marking Ms. Vogel's Broadway debut. Her work has been produced by Vineyard Theatre, Second Stage Theatre and the New York Theatre Workshop to name just a few.
Obie award winner Lea DeLaria will once again host this year's ceremony.
The Obie Award judging panel for the 2016-2017 season include Village Voice columnist and longtime Chair of the Obie Judges Michael Feingold, Obie and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar, Entertainment Weekly theater critic Melissa Rose Bernardo, Obie-winning actress J. Smith Cameron, Obie-winning actor-singer Darius de Haas, Village Voice theater critic Miriam Felton-Dansky, and Obie-winning actress Daphne Rubin-Vega.
For the past 62 years the Obie Awards have honored the best of Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway. Structured with informal categories that change annually, the Obie Awards recognize persons and productions of excellence. Unlike most theatre awards, the Obie Awards have no nominations.
