Broadway stars acknowledged in 2021 Time 100 Next List

The list details 100 influential figures who are shaping the future.

As well as the Time 100 list which states the 100 most important people in the world, the American magazine also has Time 100 Next, detailing exemplary individuals who are impacting the future. In this year's Time 100 Next list, Broadway actors and creatives are recognised both on the list, as well as giving commentary on why individuals have earned their place.

Originating the roles of John Laurens/Phillip Hamilton in Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, Anthony Ramos is on the list. Since Hamilton, he's also starred in films including A Star is Born and will play Usnavi in the movie adaptation of In The Heights. Speaking about Ramos, Leslie Odom Jr. wrote: "For the culture, we must protect Anthony Ramos at all costs... He is charting his own path... The emotional range and acting facility, the wit and wicked sense of humor, the one-in-a-millon singing voice come together within a special person whose bounty of gifts is matched with a rock-solid humanity and core of integrity. We can trust Ramos with the keys he is about to be given. He has been well-prepared. His voice matters. The space he occupies matters." 

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda also spoke of Amanda Gorman, the first National Youth Poet Laureate who performed at President Joe Biden's Inauguration. Miranda said: "If the hardest part of an artist's job is to fully and honestly meet the moment, Amanda delivered a master class. She spoke truth to power and embodied clear-eyed hope to a weary nation. She revealed us to ourselves. Here's the best part: there are so many more moments for Amanda Gorman to meet. Now the world knows the poet's name." 

Amber Ruffin has also made the list, recently announced as part of the Some Like It Hot creative team. Ruffin was the first African-American woman to write for a late-night show in the United States, working on Seth Meyers' show. For Time, Meyers said she has a "boundless optimism for the best humanity has to offer with a wary eye for when it lets us down. She pulls no punches, but with each knockout she extends a friendly hand to lift you off the mat. She won't tell you things are O.K. to make you feel better. She'll tell you how to be better so things are O.K. Amber Ruffin has been ready for this moment for a long time, but there's never been a moment we have needed her more."
